Happy Birthday Sara García

There are certain absolute truths in Mexican culture:

1) Whether you like soccer or not, you’re at your Mexi-proudest during the World Cup.

2) Regardless if you’re an atheist, you’ll drop to your knees and pray to the Virgencita if a family member gets ill; and

3) Sara García holds an indelible sweet spot in your heart.

Known as “La Abuelita del Cine Mexicano” (Mexican Cinema’s Granny), García was born this day in 1895 in Veracruz. After a stint as a teacher in al all-girls Catholic school, she took to acting, and eventually starred in over 150 films alongside the likes of Pedro Infante, Joaquín Pardavé  and Cantinflas.

On November 21, 1980 she went to that big movie theatre in the sky, but lives on eternally as the face of Chocolate Abuelita.

Pour some hot cocoa on the ground, son.
