Iraqis Also Love Mariachi Music

Member of the Mariachi Relámpago, Austin resident Carlos Meda had no clue how much his tune was about to change after getting deployed to Iraq last December.

The country’s national anthem’s lyrics recently altered after the fall of Saddam Hussein, Meda’s commander in the 34th infantry division needed someone to step in and sing it as a sign of good faith at public events. That’s when the specialist with the Texas Army National Guard stepped in and gave the traditional song a little sazón.

“I’m not nervous about singing [it], because I’m used to singing back home…I’m just nervous about singing it wrong,” the humble mariachi man says.

Somewhere in his tank, Juno is again jizzing out of sheer joy.
