Tijuana Border Reading Program Kicks Off

Mexico’s National Council for Culture and the Arts (CONACULTA) launched the Lectura en Espera (Lecture in Waiting) program over the weekend and cars at the Tijuana/San Diego border crossing got pimped.

But not with Our Lady of Guadalupe hood ornaments or chrome spinners, but the latest ‘in’ accessory: bright orange cones resting atop vehicles, denoting that passengers riding inside are getting their culture on.

Eager volunteers were giving away L.A. Lakers-approved yellow and purple string bracelets and waiting their turn to cruise in a book lending librobici, while authors like Bertha Denton read passages from one of her works over a PA system and local  rock legend Javier Bátiz—channeling his best Chapulín Colorado dressed in head-to-toe red, fine-tuned his guitar.
