Narcofilms on the Rise

20th Century Fox has announced it has acquired Mexico distribution rights for Canana Films’ Miss Bala (Miss Bullet), The Hollywood Reporter, informs.

The announcement, comes fresh of the heels of Bala being selected for the 2011 Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section.

Slated for a September release, director Gerardo Naranjo’s Diosa Coronada-esque fourth film is based on former Miss Sinaloa Laura Zúñiga’s life and tells the tale of a young girl clinging to her beauty queen fantasy amidst her country’s very real organized crime dilemma.

Narco-themed films are nothing new in Mexico,  though its heyday had long passed with brothers Mario and Fernando Almada being at the forefront of 1970’s and ’80’s narco películas; though the success of modern spins like Saving Private Perez has made the genre resurge.
